The construction industry currently generates 8% of gross domestic product (GDP) within the United Kingdom, employs around 1.5 million people and currently uses around six tonnes of material each year for every man, woman and child. The industry is widely seen as a poor performer with respect to environmental protection whether through poor control of work methods or as a large user of finite global resources such as aggregates and energy.
The Manual provides simple, informative guidance on the key environmental issues that face most construction projects and the steps that must be taken both to ensure compliance with legal duty and, through the application of good practice, to ensure the environment is adequately protected.
